Burning Man is an annual gathering that takes place in the Black Rock Desert of northwestern Nevada. It is described as an experiment in community, art, self-expression, and radical self-reliance. The event creates a temporary city called Black Rock City, dedicated to art, self-expression, and community.
Founded in 1986 on Baker Beach in San Francisco, the event moved to the Nevada desert in 1990 and has grown from a small gathering of friends to a global cultural phenomenon attracting over 80,000 participants annually.
Unlike traditional festivals, Burning Man operates on a gift economy — no money changes hands (except for ice and coffee at Center Camp). Participants are expected to be self-reliant, bring everything they need, and leave no trace when they depart.
These guiding principles were crafted by Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey in 2004 and form the cultural foundation of the event.
